Ahead of Our Time — Truck Fest, 1994

When our first pallet shipment arrived from Denmark in April 1994, it included a few cases of the large Italian salt liquorice stick. The recommendation came from a Norwegian friend who had sold it in Oslo. “Get the large salt one,” he said. So we did.

We unveiled it at Truck Fest that summer, full of confidence. Britain was not ready. The crowds who’d happily eaten sweet liquorice all their lives encountered salty liquorice for the first time and simply could not get their heads around it. We were, to put it mildly, ahead of our time.

Thirty-two years on, the picture is very different. Salty liquorice has found its audience in the UK — a passionate, dedicated, and growing one. Italian Salt Liquorice Twists 2.0 are back, and this time the timing is exactly right.
